Wayne Daniels - Spinning Icosahedron (made by Stephen Chin, 2009)
also known as the 'Spinning Icosa Polyhedra' or 'Spinico'. Stephen Chin calls it the 'Exploding Icosahedron'. disassembly is a party trick; reassembly is a puzzle: if you spin it like a top it dramatically flies apart, sometimes immediately, sometimes after a moment, and sometimes, frankly it's just not in the mood and would rather be alone with its thoughts, and i respect that.
unlike Wayne's original, Stephen's version is an assembly of ten identical pieces rather than two sets of five mirrored pieces. it's not too difficult to reassemble, but it's a bit of a dexterity puzzle and takes a while to figure out how to do it. internal faces are marked to guide assembly.
made from red gum (exterior) and radiata pine (interior).
not sure how many were made, but Stephen sold the last few in 2020.
