Description
This puzzle is made by Lee
Krasnow, Lee has this to say about Stewart Coffins design
"Design notes: this difficult puzzle consists of 12 pieces,
ten of which are the same rotationally symmetrical shape. Of the remaining two,
one is missing an end block (it's the key piece) and the other one has that
missing end block augmented onto its side. They assemble into a symmetrical
cluster, and although the shape is not obvious, it is not too difficult to
figure out how the pieces should fit if you are familiar with
rhombic-dodecahedral geometry. The hard part is getting the last piece in place
(well, the second to last... the key piece is the last piece, and it is easy to
insert) assembly (and disassembly) involves shifting several pieces back and
forth. The puzzle is hollow (the hollow space is a rhombic dodecahedron)
however nothing can be put inside this space because it is needed for the
pieces to shift. Consequently, there are times when you will find yourself
unable to shift a piece the way that you want to because the portion of the
center that you need is occupied by another piece. There is another way to
assemble these pieces -- using six of the standard pieces (not the key piece,
not the augmented piece) you can make a sort of 'waffle' shape. this is very
similar to the puzzle 'trinity' designed by Lynn Yarbrough. This assembly
requires coordinate motion. See a Twelve-Piece Separation No. 1 for a picture
of this coordinate motion assembly. A symmetrical interlocking assembly of
twelve pieces. Ten of the pieces are identical and consist of a triangular
stick with a rhombic pyramid block attached to each end resulting in a rhombic
profile when viewing a piece from the end. One of these blocks has been removed
from the eleventh piece and attached to the side of the twelfth. There is only
one solution to the puzzle. Assembling and disassembling the puzzle requires
shifting the pieces back and forth in order to insert or remove the next piece.
Assembly is very difficult. Stewart considers this to be one of his best
puzzles. He made 30 from 1988 to 1992. Number 85 in his numbering system." The puzzle I am offering is a single wood puzzle and is an excellent example of Lee's strict attention to detail and incredible choice of woods this puzzle is beyond beautiful and one of the more difficult puzzles I am as yet unable to solve, best of luck to the winner.
