Description
Stewart Coffin's Two Tiers puzzle ( STC #75-A) made from Bocote, Bloodwood, Tropical Walnut, Yellowheart, Chakte Viga and Koa. Puzzle is from my personal collection. This is the most difficult puzzle for me to part with, but I truly believe that other die hard Coffin collectors would want the chance to own it and will appreciate it as much as I do.
This is the infamous Two Tiers puzzle. This design has been sitting on the shelf for many years but was never made by Mr Coffin (or anyone else that I am aware of). Mr Coffin devoted an entire chapter in his PWPD book about it. Therefore, this is a one of a kind item. I understand why it was never made, as it is a tremendous pain in the expletive to make. I will not try it again anytime soon, so please don't ask. Essentially this is a two tiered garnet with the interior a standard garnet (#60) and the exterior where each piece is the same. The exterior pieces run in the opposite direction to the interior pieces, making for really unusual looking pieces. On top of all of that, the design calls for one of the interior garnet pieces to be left unglued. In this manner, the puzzle can be assembled in both of the published solutions. This means the puzzle has to be very accurately made, which it is.
This puzzle is not perfect, as some of the color from adjoining woods in the interior leeched onto each other during the construction process. THERE IS A LOOSE PIECE INSIDE, BUT IT IS DESIGNED THAT WAY.
If the buyer chooses to use Paypal, then Paypal fees of 3% will be added to the price. Buyer assumes all shipping fees.
