Jesse Born - Pi Box (2018)
from Jesse's description:
This puzzle box is made entirely out of wood, and that includes wooden hinges made out of an exotic dark wood called Mexican Ebony. The Pi Box is an octagon design with nine wedges of "pie" that move in a secret sequence to unlock the box; the puzzle is solved once all nine pieces are centered. It was released in 2018 on National Pi Day, March 14.
and some further interesting information in an email from Jesse:
The internal mechanism was...a beast. I had a trying time figuring out loose ends. I actually thought of the centering of pie wedges first and then tinkered with solutions and found the pi sequence solved a nonagon perfectly. Incredible! Per a couple math genius friends of mine: The probability that your procedure works with an arbitrary nine digit number, ending with all pie-shaped elements in and assuming no 0's being used, is .0009.
if you're daring enough, there is a wooden peg on the inside of the lid that will allow you to view the full mechanism. it's very interesting.
also please do not put pie in the Pi Box. that's the rule.
