This puzzle is a exchange puzzle by Joe Becker for the International Puzzle Party 25 held in Helsinki, Finland 2005
Goal:
Please assemble the nine identical septomino pieces into a 4x4x4 cube, minus one cubie.
About the puzzle:
I rediscovered this “buried treasure” while searching for identical-shape polycube near-solutions to the 4x4x4 cube. There are only three non-flat septominoes such that nine of the same shape can fit into a 4x4x4 cube. Unfortunately there are no nonominoes having the property that seven identical can fit into a 4x4x4 cube.
I found that the three non-flat septomino solutions had been previously discovered by Nob Yoshigahara in 1988, and made by Trevor Wood. Trevor’s puzzle named “Woodworm” had also inspired Nob’s name for the group, “Unhappy Woodworm”. The version I have chosen here, Nob’s “#2”, seems a bit more puzzling than the other two.
