Description
French antique puzzles from the 1850-1930 time frame are famed for the beautiful illustrations on their cardboard box covers. "Jeu des Manifestants" ("The Game of the Protesters") is none other than the famous 8 Queens Puzzle in a slight disguise. The object of the puzzle is to arrange the eight heavy cardboard pieces into a square array so that none of the eight red spots share a common line, horizontally, vertically, diagonally. This is equivalent to placing 8 queens on a chessboard so that no queen is being attacked by another. The puzzle is likely from the turn of the century (ie, around 1900), although the manufacturer, V.W. et Cie. (Villard and Weill, as determined by the puzzle numbering system, 300/ , in this case, No, 300/77) was in operation from 1824 until the early 1960's.)
"Jeu des Manifestants" is in very good condition. All corners of the box lid are intact; only one corner of the container is split; the 8 cardboard pieces are in excellent shape; and the (rather comical) cover illustration remains sharp and colorful.
I will ship within the US as a first class package for around $5.50, or at insured priority mail pricing (from likely between
$9.75 and 10.40, depending on postal code), if preferred. I am happy to ship
internationally at cost, but I cannot always guarantee that overseas
packages can be insured or tracked.
