Puzzle collector and perennial puzzle exchange participant Joe Becker asks the question, "Don't you think a 'mechanical puzzle' ought to have some gears?" "Gearloose" contains 9 intermeshed gears, some with an occasional tooth missing. The goal of "Gearloose" is to make the central red gear free spinning by turning the gears in a certain sequence. A "move" consists of turning a gear 1/8 of a turn (45°) in either direction (causing all intermeshed gears to turn, as well). Joe used "Gearloose" as his exchange puzzle at the 20th International Puzzle Party in 2000 in Los Angeles.
"Gearloose" comes as it was received at IPP20 in 2000, complete in its original plastic bag with its original instruction sheet. I will include a copy of the solution to "Gearloose"" from the IPP20 exchange booklet.
