Description
Early (1881!) jump-a-peg puzzle is a wood block, 3/4" thick, with a carved wood handle. "The Gem Solitaire" has all 32 wood pegs. The corner of the puzzle reads, "Patented May 10, 1881." Pencil writing on the bottom of the box indicates the puzzle was owned by Walter Fisher of Amsterdam, NY, on Jan. 3, 1893. The box lid does not show any maker.

- Board and pegs are in excellent condition, darkened with time. The handle is a lighter wood, attached slightly off-center, so it may have been reglued; it could also be a replacement handle, although it exactly matches the handle in the box cover illustration. The box is in below average to poor condition, with stains and discolorations, but the box bottom (not shown in the photos) is complete and solid, reglued at the corners, with one split corner. The box top is missing 2 aprons, and the other 2 have probably been reglued.
