Space is an aptly named caged burr puzzle designed by Dan Fast, this design is far out. The level 173 solution (145.1.5.4.4.2.2.2.2.2.2) is a tough challenge for even the seasoned burr solver to follow along with the solution file. Disassembly without aid is approaching the limits of human capabilities, but I am certain there are a select few out there with the ability and endurance to do so. The fourth photo is 108 moves into the solve.
Wonderfully crafted by legendary maker Maurice Vigeroux, the fit is absolutely perfect. Just enough looseness to accommodate some crazy multi-piece movements and provide a butter smooth solve from start to finish. Crafted with a Purpleheart cage and Red Palm pieces. The burr sticks have aluminum dowels pressed into the endgrain and sanded flush to provide a restriction on the final assembly to a single unique solution. An impressive feat of design and craftsmanship all in one puzzle.
Stored in a UV free and humidity controlled environment, the purpleheart is just as vibrant as when I received it. To my knowledge there is no lacquer or finish applied to the cage or pieces, maybe a light oil finish.
Note: Space ships assembled, solution in burr tools format will be provided to the winning bidder. There are a few cosmetic defects present on the outside of the cage such as chips, sanding marks, and glue spots. The inside has glue squeeze out which does not affect the function. These puzzles are extras and oddballs that have accumulated in the shop. Sometimes when we make a run of puzzles we will have a few with different woods, etc. which are too much trouble to list individually on the website. These puzzles are all in new condition and fully functional.
