Description

Setting Hen by Stewart Coffin (STC 61). One of the original 60 puzzles Stewart Coffin made in 1984-1985: bottom of puzzles has "STC 1984" written in pencil. From the estate of Dr. Benjamin Muckenhoupt.

Coffin writes in AP-ART:

The four pieces of Setting Hen, each made of rhombic dodecahedron blocks joined together different ways, fit flush into a cubic box. The idea behind the name was that the pieces can be packed in such a way as to suggest Mother Hen sitting on her next of eggs with just her head poking out above the rim, assembled as shown in the graphic. The task then is for her to duck down flush with the top of the box.

John Rausch writes:

The four puzzle pieces are made up of fourteen rhombic dodecahedra. There are at least three ways to fit all of the pieces into the box so the pieces are flush with the top of the box. For a second problem, set the box aside and make a pyramidal pile with a square base. For a third problem, use three of the four pieces to build a triangular pyramid.

Winning bidder will be invoiced for the total of the winning bid plus shipping fee after the auction closes.
