When it comes to kumiki puzzles, they tend
to be trivial to take apart or assemble. Their purpose is to be a
beautiful arrangement of seemingly random pieces to come together into
an artistic object. However, Miguel choose to borrow from the Japanese
concept and apply to his metal sculptures with his own ingenious spin on
it.
Berrocal sculptures are genuine puzzles
and a delight to take apart or put together. It makes for a striking
figure in metal and the pieces look almost random in how they can go
together at all! He also loves to toss in some lewd twist such as the
brass ring in the Mini Cariatide which only shows itself as a peek
between the woman's crossed legs. I say with some shame this brought me
great amusement every time I see it in passing.
If
you have any interest in kumikis, this is one of the very few I know of
which will provide an actual challenge. If you enjoy art that belongs
in a museum and want one that doubles as a puzzle, look no further!
Miguel's
work is very highly desired in the art world and while his works can be
found for sale fairly easily with some googling such as on ebay, I haven't ever seen
Mini-Cariatide up for less than $1,500 outside of the puzzling
community. But I freely admit that I'm an novice at hunting down rare
items for bargain prices.
There
is no box or printed solution that comes with this copy, or else I
would be including a picture of them with the puzzle in the pictures.
