Description

Double Cross was Tom Rodgers exchange puzzle at IPP 29 in San Francisco. Designated #240 by Stewart Coffin, it looks fairly simple with six thicker sticks intersected by six thinner sticks. Solving it is anything but, as the angles are very confusing and you always end up with that one piece that won't fit. I'm delighted with this puzzle, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Difficult enough to challenge an experienced puzzler while simple enough to be enjoyed by a novice.

Construction of this puzzle took a while- I actually started trying to make them in December of last year and was not successful until now.. I had trouble constructing a jig that would allow for precision hole placement while protecting the bottom from chipout when the drill exited. I ended up making a jig from aluminum and brass which could be adjusted to calibrate the stick position without moving the hole relative to the bit. The result is very pleasing; the holes have little to no tearout and all sticks are uniformly beveled. Thanks to Stweart for the design and sending pictures of his jigs. Mine turned out to be quite different, but his input made a big difference.

This puzzle is shipped assembled.
