Galaxy One by Aleksandr Leontev
Aleksandr has been coming up with some unique dsigns lately, and since we here at cubicdissection like to be trendy, we decided to get on the bandwagon and make some of them. His "Galaxy" series really caught my eye with its non-traditional shape and interesting movements. While Galaxy 1 is only level 4, it's tricker than you think due to all the horizontal pieces being the same wood. The solver knows that the pure white holly piece is centered vertically, but arranging the marblewood pieces in ...

Galaxy Two by Aleksandr Leontev
This second iteration in the Galaxy series has a very different solution than Galaxy one, upping the ante with a level 7 solution. Movement is expansive since it goes largely in the opposite direction that Galaxy 1 did. The solver faces the same conundrum they did with Galaxy one, being easily able to identify the vertical pieces yet arranging the marblewood pieces in the spiral shape remains the challenge. As before, I had to charge a bit more for this puzzle because of the expensive woods used...

Chinese Knot by Christoph Lohe unique woods (1)
Chinese Knot is a very tricky puzzle. With a level 11 solution it's not super high in terms of moves, but the pieces are uniquely shaped and cause movement restrictions that are unexpected. Simply disassembling it can be a real challenge!Construction of this puzzle is very precise, with a tight fit. This puzzle is shipped assembled. For multiple items, combined shipping is available. Inaccurate Burr by Junichi Yananose
It's not easy to come up with a new variation on the traditional six piece burr, but Juno came up with a great one! Because pairs of two pieces are off-centered, the assembled shape of the puzzle looks inaccurate though the pieces need to be accurate. The puzzle is based on one of the notchable sets of a level 9 combination. Thanks to the off-centered pieces the puzzle has unique solution and is very confusing to assemble! This puzzle is shipped assembled. For multiple items, combined shipping is ...

Just 3 by Noah Prettyman
Just Three is from the brilliant mind of young prodigy Noah Prettyman. The level 8.4 solution is quite tricky for an interlocking burr with only three pieces. Beautifully crafted from milled zebrawood and maple, this puzzle looks great when solved!Construction is very precise, with a bit of room left for humidity expansion as it's very dry in the workshop this time of year. This puzzle is shipped assembled. For multiple items, combined shipping is available. Burr Bones by Frank Potts
Frank's designs can be few and far in between, but are generally worth waiting for. "Burr Bones" is no exception. This three piece devil is a crafty level 24 solution with TONS of dead ends and trickiness. The skeletonized traditional three piece shape looks stunning in contrasting woods, and the completed puzzle is surprisingly stable.Like many of Frank's designs, this was not an easy puzzle to make. A ton of milling and gluing went into this puzzle but it was worth it! Fit is extremely precise...

Double Cross by Stewart Coffin
Double Cross was Tom Rodgers exchange puzzle at IPP 29 in San Francisco. Designated #240 by Stewart Coffin, it looks fairly simple with six thicker sticks intersected by six thinner sticks. Solving it is anything but, as the angles are very confusing and you always end up with that one piece that won't fit. I'm delighted with this puzzle, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Difficult enough to challenge an experienced puzzler while simple enough to be enjoyed by a novice.Construction of this puzzle too...

Aubade by Stéphane Chomine
A nice compliment to Basket Burr, Aubade ups the difficulty considerably. This standard six piece burr gets a boost from the frame structure that contains it. The level 13.5 solution includes some very unconventional movements; this is like no other six piece burr you've solved. An excellent design by one of the best in the game, and a must have for every collection. Our usual thorough construction is in evidence, with through cuts securing the upright frame and excellent tolerances on milled pie...

Notes by Tamas Vanyo
Notes is a very unique concept by the clever Mr. Vanyo. The pieces look similar to music notes on written sheet music, and the solver must find a way to dance them around each other until all are packed tightly into the walnut frame. With eighteen moves total required for assembly, learning this dance is no easy task. Are you up to the challenge of this partner?!Construction of this puzzle is excellent with our usual precise fit and strong joinery. Pieces are reinforced with shoulder joints and ...

Dinlas by Terry Smart
Reminiscent of one of my favorite puzzles (MINE's Cube in Cage), Dinlas bumps it up from a 3x3 cube to a 4x4. Assembly is VERY tricky, with complicated manipulations at unexpected points. Very fun, very tricky, very attractive when solved!Construction of this puzzle is excellent. All cube pieces are beveled, and the cage contains magnets which keep it nicely symmetrical in the resting position. This puzzle is shipped assembled. For multiple items, combined shipping is available. Le Grand Taupe by Alfons Eyckmans
As mentioned elsewhere, I enjoy odd shaped burr puzzles. Some of them are less fun though when built...they're shaky or don't move or interact well. The Le Taupe by Alfons didn't have that problem. Movements was tight and satisfying, with each piece sliding effortlessly once you discerned the direction of the next move. It was just a lot of fun to manipulate and solve, so when Alfons emailed me the big brother design I knew immediately I'd make it. I used the same woods in Le Grand Taupe, but sw...

Quads & Rings 1 by Yavuz Demirhan
I noticed a lot of interesting board and stick burrs coming out on Ishino's site so I decided to make batch of them. After looking at a couple dozen designs I chose six for their rpresentation of the various concepts and levels of difficulty.Believe it or not, this is the simpler iteration of the Quads and Rings series. Four wooden burr pieces interlock with two acrylic pieces with a level 13.5 solution. Doable dispite the high level because a lot of the moves just follow. Achieving the checkerb...

Grip by Tim Alkema
I love hidden mazes, and Tim's design really brings it! A single burr piece is locked into the box by two cubes. They dance around the interior until, if you're skilled (or very lucky), the internals come completely out. Packing them back in is another challenge entirely, with a level 15.4 solution! The fact that there are two variables navigating the interior space makes this somewhat unique and especially compelling.Construction of this puzzle is superlative! The mitered box has a nicely symme...

Spacemine by Yavuz Demirhan
This is definitely not a super difficult puzzle, but that doesn't mean it's not a lot of fun! Sometimes messing about with something fairly simple can be a lot of fun. Spacemine has a level 4.5 solution and only five pieces. Three of them traditional three piece burr sticks, and two identical cage pieces. While obviously not as difficult as many higher piece burrs, this one's not necessarily a slam dunk either...it has it's tricky bits.I've constructed this from solid exotic Sapele and Imbuya. T...

Pair Dance by Osanori Yamamoto
Pair Dance is a fun little distraction with a level 14 solution. It's not nearly as difficult as that may sound since there are only two pieces. PenTIC by Andrew Crowell
Five is the magic number! This "Turning Interlocking Cube" has a level five solution, with five rotations and five different wood types. Designed by Andrew Crowell, these fascinating TIC's take it to the next level. Instead of straightforward linear moves, these designs require rotations during the solution process. Construction is outstanding, with shouldered joinery where side grain gluing is not possible, and detailed bevels which flow around the shouldered joints for a uniform appearance.Thi...

Basket Burr by Yavuz Demirhan
Basket Burr is similar to Sextbord in that it uses burr pieces captured in a frame. However, Basket Burr goes the other direction in difficulty, with a much simpler level 4.5 solution. Trivial to disassemble and not too hard to reassemble, Basket Burr nonetheless is fun for beginners or those who don't have the patience for the super high level burrs (I name myself among them!).Construction of this puzzle is precise with moderate fit that should work in all but the most humid of climates. Jerrican by Stéphane Chomine
I very much enjoy tricky puzzles with few pieces. Odd One Out was one such puzzle, and when I found Jerrican I knew I wanted to make it. It's an amazing design; two fairly simple pieces dance around each other in surprising ways to cumulate in a level 12.4 solution. Lots of fun and a nice gotcha when shared with an unsuspecting puzzle friend.Construction of this puzzle is robust, with shouldered box construction and a floating bottom to ensure strength. The same woods were used with Odd One Out,...
