I like *some* packing puzzles, and this one made the cut. It's a set of pentominos and a simple box, yet there is only ONE solution to packing them all in. A truly extraordinary achievement! I interpreted this one with a lot of panache, using 12 different woods for the pieces (Canary, Bubinga, Yellowheart, Peruvian Walnut, Paduak, Wenge, Shedue, Mahogany, Ipe, Bocote, Cherry, Ash). Double Cross was Tom Rodgers exchange puzzle at IPP 29 in San Francisco. Designated #240 by Stewart Coffin, it looks fairly simple with six thicker sticks intersected by six thinner sticks. Solving it is anything but, as the angles are very confusing and you always end up with that one piece that won't fit. I'm delighted with this puzzle, it's a heck of a lot of fun. Notes is a very unique concept by the clever Mr. Vanyo. The pieces look similar to music notes on written sheet music, and the solver must find a way to dance them around each other until all are packed tightly into the walnut frame. Pack 3 is a wonderful little gem of a packing puzzle by Mr. Yamamoto. The three pieces fit inside a 3x3x2 box with a very unusual opening.  There are two solutions, one trivial and the other tricky. The trivial solution puts the pieces in the box, while the tricky and intended solution is to put the pieces in as an apparent 3x3x2 with no holes showing from the opening. Reminiscent of one of my favorite puzzles (MINE's Cube in Cage), Dinlas bumps it up from a 3x3 cube to a 4x4. Assembly is VERY tricky, with complicated manipulations at unexpected points. Impossible Triangle of Three Cubes is actually not impossible, it's quite approachable in fact. Three odd shaped pieces come together to form three joined cubes. As mentioned elsewhere, I enjoy odd shaped burr puzzles. Some of them are less fun though when built...they're shaky or don't move or interact well. The Le Taupe by Alfons didn't have that problem. Movements was tight and satisfying, with each piece sliding effortlessly once you discerned the direction of the next move. 4L is one of my favorite puzzles ever and I"m glad to finally have permission to make them available on Cubicdissection. I love hidden mazes, and Tim's design really brings it! A single burr piece is locked into the box by two cubes. They dance around the interior until, if you're skilled (or very lucky), the internals come completely out. Packing them back in is another challenge entirely, with a level 15.4 solution! Soma in Case is another offering from design genius Hajime Katsumoto. The seven soma pieces must be packed into a 5x3x2 space. Not too tough, except that the lid also has a cube secured to it and so the pieces must maneuver around the obstruction. Over 100,000 solutions, only one is assemblable with a combined 14 moves necessary. This is definitely not a super difficult puzzle, but that doesn't mean it's not a lot of fun! Sometimes messing about with something fairly simple can be a lot of fun.
