A little pestle can be inserted through a hole in the top. Inside is a ball, larger than the hole. Get the ball out. Described in Hoffmann's 'Puzzles Old and New’ Ch. II Nr.I (1893). This author helped preserving the memory of some mechanical puzzles of the Victorian Era, the majority of which are turnings from boxwood that fall in the take-apart category. John Berkeley's reproductions are all museum-quality works from rare and expensive exotic hardwoods. This one is a unique custom made copy, produced in 2010 from Pink Ivory.
