Description
Most of you already know that I have been assembling the last few puzzles for Randal Gatewood after his passing. And this is his very last puzzle box.
I must admit that I sobbed like a baby as I cut off his hallmark branding-iron stamp from its shaft to formally decommission it. It has since been cleansed from my tears with an acid wash base and proper buffing, and it now presides firmly attached front and center on his very last puzzle.
It had always been my desire to work on a joint project with every puzzle designer out there, but Randal got taken from us far too soon. It was not what I had in mind, but finishing the last of these puzzles was the closest I could come to working on a project with him. I now have closure, and this puzzle box officially completes his legacy.
The majority of all parts were crafted by Randal prior to his passing. It is authentic to his original vision as best I could achieve, which was my goal. All I did was assemble his already cut pieces, add some decorative border accents to the lid, print instruction books, and properly apply its finish.
The puzzle is hallmarked with his official wood brand stamp. It is the last time it was ever used, and it now resides on the front of the box. I consider it an honor to have added my own hallmark stamp on the bottom next to his, as this signifies that we actually worked on a project together.
The puzzle is crafted from paduk with maple and purpleheart accents. It measures 5.5” cubed, and comes with a 2-page (illustrated) instruction book. All proceeds go to his family.
Rest in peace Randal, knowing that your legacy is now complete. At the time of your passing, you were the happiest I had ever known you, and I wish all of us to go that way. But you were taken far too soon, and you are still being missed. Your memory lives on in the happiness of the puzzles you have brought into the world.
