Description
Designed by artist Robert Yarger, this Stickman No. 8 puzzle box internally makes use of a specialized "three-position mechanical toggle" system. Such toggles were first used to mechanically tally information in ancient (B.C.) calculating machines, but when incorporated into a puzzle box it produces a very unique result.
.
In this box, the same move does not always produce an identical result. Panels that were once freed by performing a particular step will not always become free when the same step is repeated again. Also, a puzzle sleuth cannot simply undo a step to reverse a mistake. In fact, each move made in error only adds to the challenge of getting this box open. Although somewhat complex at first, this box will open effortlessly once its underlying concept is discovered.
.
This box has a single hidden drawer that will only reveal itself after a bare minimum of 18-40 moves, (depending on the starting position of internal toggles.) There is also an additional trick to pulling the draw out fully. This trick is so profound that it has eluded most every puzzle sleuth so far, but simple enough that they all feel like idiots when they are reduced to looking at the solution. It is constructed of maple and poplar internally and uses wenge and purpleheart for external inlays. The box measures approx. 7" x 3 ½" x 3" , weighs 1 ½ lbs and comes with a 5-page color illustrated instruction booklet.
.
While only 25 of these boxes were ever made, only a fraction of them were ever listed for sale. It is hard to come up with a favorite puzzlebox, but this one is in my top 2. As such, I have held back 3 of these instead of just one for my personal collection (don’t ask me to sell them because I won’t). In addition, I goofed up on 7 of these boxes during production. Perhaps I will find a way to fix them in the future, but they are not currently in a working condition.
.
This box is No. 14 out of the limited edition set of 25, but due to the reasons above, a total of only 14 of them were ever sold. This box is in perfect uncirculated condition and was also earmarked for my personal collection. Reluctantly, I am willing to part with it because I already have a wenge/purpleheart version.
.
I am terrible at taking pictures, so I am using the pictures Eric took for the original listing. This box is identical to the first edition wenge/purpleheart shown in the picture. The picture of the box in an open position is of a different version, and is only included for a reference to see what it looks like when opened. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
