Mind Jewel is a puzzle devised by Alexander Polonsky. It consists of 12 pentagonal pyramids connected by an elastic cord.
The puzzle pieces are blue, red, or green.
The goal is:
Arrange the pyramids so that they form a single closed shape. This means that the pieces are placed as if they were lying on the surface of a dodecagon. The elastic passes through a slot on the side of each pyramid, and you often choose yourself through which edge of the pentagon the elastic enters or exits.
Number of positions:
There are 12 pieces. Of the 10 pieces in the center, the elastic can only assume two angles for 5 pieces, there are three possible angles for 3 pieces, and all four possible angles can be assumed for 2 pieces. This gives a total of 2⁵ · 3³ · 4² = 13,824 possibilities. In practice, there are far fewer, because choices are often blocked by earlier pieces in the arrangement. Nevertheless, it is more difficult than this low number suggests.
