Melting Block (Redstone Box) designed by Thomas H. O'Beirne, crafted in red oak by Jerry McFarland. Bottom of box has stamped number "16" next to "JM 90" written in pencil. From the estate of Dr. Benjamin Muckenhoupt.
Puzzle can be assembled with either 8 or 9 pieces. John Rausch writes:
"The puzzle is usually presented as shown in the second photograph with the "extra" block not assembled into the puzzle. The pieces in the box create a regular rectangular solid with no internal voids. In the third photograph, all of the pieces are in the box. Quite a remarkable dissection."
