Description
The Hexagonal Porcupine is an extension of the Hectix discovered independently by Bill and Stewart Coffin. Coffin patented the puzzle and used the name Hectix. The Hexagonal Porcupine uses four sets of twelve parallel hexagonal rods. There are only three different types of notched rods used, but the notching is very complex. Bill includes a ten-page explanation of the pieces and how to assemble and disassemble the puzzle. |
The Hexagonal Porcupine is to Hectix as the 18-Piece Burr (e.g. Lovely) is to the 6-Piece Burr. There are 12 rods in each of the 4 directions as compared to Hectix's 3 rods.
Sample pieces are shown in the second picture. The inner rods have unusual notches. It takes several moves to get out the first piece.
If one of the center pieces in the puzzle were notched around all pieces it hits, it would not be split in two, but would have a very delicate helical structure.
