Description
This is an early design by Marcel Gillen - directly copying the description from his 1992 catalogue :
"All parts are made of brass. You should try to move the central ring (which seems to object to being shifted) from one side of the dumb-bell to the other without using force and without knocking the puzzle (there are no magnetic parts inside!)."
This is a very heavy puzzle weighing just over 1.5kg or three pounds or 24 standard puzzle hamsters.
Please note that this puzzle has a heavy patina and, when I first received it, I could not get it to solve. A friend, who also has a copy, eventually solved it and has subsequently done so since repeatedly. The mechanism should therefore be considered as a little temperamental though has subsequently "freed up". It is a puzzle that will almost certainly benefit from some early repeat solves and the occasional play thereafter. I suspect it was simply a case of it having sat unsolved for many years.
Notwithstanding this, the DUMB-BELL is a rare and early Gillen puzzle. As far as I can tell one has not been available at auction since 2006.. Like the other puzzles I am selling the start price does not reflect the expected value.
******************************
This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selling on behalf of Ethel Brokenshire. Those who knew Laurie will understand how well these have been looked after. The puzzles are being listed with modest starting prices, please bid generously.

I will be happy to combine shipping if you win multiple items. The incremental shipping cost for second and subsequent items is only likely to be a couple of dollars or so.
