Description
Original Cutler Cube, Type B, built by Bill Cutler for Dr. Benjamin Muckenhoupt. This is the cube Bill Cutler mentions in his monograph, "The Cutler Cube Puzzle," where he writes (p.5):
Version 6 was designed around 1976, and the first models were sold to Hordern and Muckenhoupt. Later Jerry Slocum purchased one. (These are called "Type B").
Cutler's first prototype Cubes are don't display the woodcraft of later, more polished Cubes. The piece ends are rough, and there are gaps between pieces visible in the photos. But this puzzle brought Dr. Muckenhoupt great joy.
Intended as a take-apart puzzle, disassembly is very tricky with many many false starts and dead ends. Reassembly is of course very very difficult. I don't generally include instructions, but I will gladly send the directions to this one should the buyer wish (just email me).
Cutler writes in "The Cutler Cube Puzzle":
The Cube has 66 pieces, all cut from a square rod of wood, except piece '*' which is half as thick. The puzzle really consists of two parts:
(1) The "innards" are 24 pieces which are in the shape of a 24-piece burr.
These pieces vary from version to version, and are the "workings" of the puzzle and what make it difficult to disassemble. These pieces must be manipulated in the correct way to disassemble the puzzle.
(2) The "shell" of the puzzle consists of 41 pieces which complete the cube shape of the puzzle and also hold the "innards" from coming apart. The innermost pieces of the shell lock the entire puzzle together.
Winning bidder will be invoiced for the total of the winning bid plus 4% handling fee plus shipping fee after the auction closes.
