The "Daily Mail World Record Net Sale Puzzle" is a very colorful puzzle used to advertise the Daily Mail newspaper, way back in 1920, OVER 100 YEARS AGO. The great Jacques Haubrich, in his three-volume Compendium of Card Matching Puzzles, classifies this puzzles as a "19 hexagonal cards edge matching puzzle," which pretty much explains the goal of the puzzle, to use the nineteen small hexagons to form a large (5x5x5) hexagon (as illustrated on the cover) such that the colors and wording on adjoining edges match. Solutions had to be submitted by January 3, 1921. £100 was offered to the first correct solution submitted, another £100 was offered for a second different solution, and £50 was offered for an additional solution. (It was later proved that only two non-trivially related solutions are possible!)
The "Daily Mail World Record Net Sale Puzzle" is complete and in remarkably colorful condition for being over 100 years old. It includes an original copy of the solution as clipped from the January 3, 1921 edition of the Daily Mail! In addition, I will include a copy of the solution from Jacques' Compendium for the successful bidder.
