Pseudo-Notched Sticks
Coffin describes this as a simple puzzle that looks like the class six-piece diagonal burr, when you try to take it apart by the usual way of pulling on two opposite pieces nothing happens. He describes it as a novelty or practical joke saying "For more fun it can be expanded in all directions to almost the point of collapse"This version has been made by Pelikan Puzzles.******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selli...

Four Corners : IPP14 Exchange Version
Coffin design number 6. Roy Rice exchanged this puzzle, way, way back at IPP 14.The fit is good, one of the six identical pieces has been inscribed with "RR 94", which technically makes it less identical than the other five pieces.******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selling on behalf of Ethel Brokenshire. Leaning Tower of Altekruse : IPP15 Exchange
Edward Hordern's exchange puzzle at IPP15 in Tokyo. This puzzle is a woodworkers nightmare, it's an Altekruse where all three axis have been tilted by five degrees. There are ten pieces of one type and two of another. There is a little dust on some of the interior parts of the puzzle but it is (now) moving well. ******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selling on behalf of Ethel Brokenshire. Improved Cluster Buster : Rare Stewart Coffin puzzle
Another rare Coffin original (see my other listings). Stewart's compendium shows he made ten in 1973, though curiously this one is inscribed "STC 1983" I suspect a typo crept into his compendium. Only 10 were made and I can find no record of a Coffin original version having previously been available at auction.******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selling on behalf of Ethel Brokenshire. Cluster Plus : Rare Stewart Coffin puzzle #114
Another rare Coffin original (see my other listings). #114 in Stewart's numbering system and, for me, the hardest of all the Cluster Buster series as it introduces coordinate motion into the mix! Six dissimilar pieces made from Cherry with one piece inscribed "114 STC 1996". 14 were made. A little small than Improved Cluster Buster which I have also listed.******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to find puzzles that I (Steve Nicholls) am selling on behalf...

The General : #13 Stewart Coffin
Another rare Coffin original (see my other listings). This copy of The General is likely made of Honduras Mahogany as mentioned in Coffin's AP-ART compendium. It is an imposing puzzle standing just under 12 cm and another classic/tricky Coffin design. One piece (pictured) is inscribed with "STC 1985" - I think it a 5, after 3 decades the final digit has faded a little! The puzzle fits well and is a fun solve!******************************This is one of a number of rare/collectible/hard to fi...

Rosebud : #13
A classic coffin design. Six pieces assemble in a co-ordinate motion and the puzzle opens and closes like a rosebud. It can be assembled in other configurations. The movement on this copy is good though a little tight to begin with when the pieces have greatest contact with each other. It comes complete with the re-moveable retaining pin which allows it to be almost fully opened without collapse. I am not 100% certain but believe this to be a Wenge/Mahogany version made by Pelikan in 2005. I've...

Convolution : Stewart Coffin #30
A nice looking copy of Coffin's Convolution puzzle. A design that everyone should own! This is puzzle solves well but the first piece out is a little loose, with encouragement it will fall out under it's own weight. The final 3 or 4 pieces are slightly tight. Nevertheless this is a good copy of a classic design. There are no makers marks and, as this is a design that has been reproduced by many crafters, not one where I have been able to determine the maker. The cubies are exactly 3/4 in...

Osanori's Pair Rings by Tom Lensch
A fantastic and, for me, difficult 5 piece puzzle designed by Osanori Yamamoto and crafted by Tom Lensch. This is a high move puzzle for more details see https://puzzlewillbeplayed.com/651Ring/PairRings/ The puzzle has a slightly loose fit but this has no impact on the solution and makes it a pleasure to solve as the pieces glide into place on each move. One piece is marked with Tom's stamp, it has been made with half inch voxels.******************************This is one of a number of rare/co...

159-A Seven-Piece Hexsticks, Improved : Stewart Coffin
159-A in Stewart's numbering scheme. Five pairs of pieces are joined and this puzzle has a tricky disassembly. The note in the box this comes from suggest it was made by Eric and I'm inclined to agree. Eric made 40 of these in 2008 (https://cubicdissection.com/products/seven-piece-improved-hexsticks) this looks like the Paduak version. As Eric said at the time "Mr. Coffin called this the optimal design of the various Hexsticks varieties. It has a single solution which is serially interlocking an...

Three Bunnies
Three Bunnies : Stewart Coffin design #118. Three dissimilar pieces go together in co-ordinate motion. Jerry Slocum used the Stewart Coffin copy of this puzzle as his exchange at IPP-18, this is the Bits and Pieces copy. Definitely functional and it is a fun, simple little puzzle to solve. A serially interlocking Coffin design made by Wayne Daniel with six pieces and a locking dowel to form a cube. Oskar's Matchboxes by Oskar van Deventer (RPP)
Oskar's Matchboxes have always been one of my favorite designs. Very few puzzles come close in terms of originality, appearance, and overall appeal. The five pieces consist of an outer box and inner tray cleverly glued together. The goal is to assemble the pieces to contain every tray inside a box. With only two solutions, this is quite tricky!Matchboxes is quite time-consuming puzzle to craft. Each piece is constructed using the same robust shoulder joinery we used to make the Tube It In puzzle...

Pin Ball by William Hu Prototype Copy
The Pin Cubes series by William Hu are three new cubes based on a 3x3x3 structure. By including drilled holes and pins, each puzzle in the set takes advantage of this format in a different way and creates three very different experiences. Designed to be tricky in both disassembly as well as assembly, they are a new take on an old idea, and well worth a look. Pinball (Walnut) is the most difficult. Pinball is quite unusual; there is clearly a single movement that wants to happen, but it is stopp...
