Description
The great Martin Gardner's November 1971 "Mathematical Games" column in Scientific American was titled "Advertising Premiums to Beguile the Mind." This column was later reproduced as Chapter 12 in the Martin Gardner collection Wheels, Life, and Other Mathematical Amusements (W.H. Freeman and Co., 1983). After discussing the classic T puzzle as an advertising premium, the classic 5-piece square puzzle as an advertising premium, and several Sam Loyd puzzles used as advertising premiums, Martin closes with,
"From hundreds of other mathematical premiums, I select as a final specimen a card that advertises a brand of Scotch whiskey. This seemingly trivial addition problem trips most people whether they've had a drink or not."
as illustrated in the second photo.
I am offering a copy of this very advertising card to which Martin refers! Both sides of the card are shown in the first photo, with the surprisingly elusive correct answer covered up.
This is a rare opportunity to own a rare piece of Martin Gardner history.
I will be able to mail the advertising card as a first class letter (around $3.00). I am happy to ship
internationally at cost, but I cannot always guarantee that overseas letters can be insured or tracked.
Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this rare piece of Martin Gardner ephemera.
Thank you for viewing my auction!
